All recordings transferred, restored and mastered from the original analogue masters by Nancy Conforti, Shane Carroll and Andreas K. Meyer, Swan Studios NYC, using 24 bit / 96 kHz technology.
All photos and scans of 78s from the Eugene Ormandy photographs (Ms. Coll. 330), Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts, University of Pennsylvania Libraries; p. 9 by Ray Lee Jackson.
The covers of the CD sleeves included in this set mimic RCA Victor’s idiosyncratic 78rpm album cover designs from the 1930s, some with their off-center printed titles. The CD labels also mimic 78rpm labels of the time, so as to give today’s listeners an idea of what classical music albums looked like in the heyday of the gramophone record. However, for practical reasons, as with our John Barbirolli set with the New York Philharmonic, we have in many cases combined the repertoire of several original 78rpm sets onto a single CD.
Consists of previously released material. CDs 3 [13], 4 [19] and 9 [22] previously unreleased.

Note, Some discographies are unclear about the actual commercial release of album DM-915 with Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite as well as the takes designated as masters. The album was indeed listed in September 1942 as a Red Seal release and appeared in the new release listings of The New Records and The Musical Quarterly magazines in 1942. Later, album DM-915 made it into the Best Selling Record Albums list of Classical Artists by Billboard magazine beginning of 1945 and 1946, right alter the previous years’ holiday seasons.

Note, The actual master for side 2 of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition is CS 013058-2 according to the RCA Victor Blue Card and not take -1 (Hl) [Hi= Hold indefinitely] as sources suggest. interestingly, there are three metal part copies of take -1 in the Sony Music Archives, so it might well be that take -1 was used for release, although the Blue Card gives no information that master -2 was worn out and needed to be replaced (see p. 19).

Note, The matrix that served as master for side 9 of Strauss’s Symphonia Domestica was CS 022372-2A and -3. For this release we worked from a test pressing of -2A . The existence of three copies of metal parts and a test pressing in the Sony Music Archives indicates that -2A was the preferred master. For side 10, matrices CS 022373-3, -2, and -1 have all – at some point – acted as masters according to the RCA Victor Blue Card. The original designations were -1 {Hi), -2 {Hi), -3 {M) [Hi= Hold indefinitely as master back-up; M = Master]. First, take -2 was then assigned “M” and -3 “Hi”, before -1 became “M” and -2 “Hi” again. The existence of two metal part copies as well as a test pressing of CS 022373-1 indicates that -1 was indeed final/y chosen as master.

Note. Movement Il of Vivaldi’s Concerto for 2 Violins was original/y recorded in one take on two 10″ discs, BS 030906/01. On November 19, 1941 these were rerecorded onto two 12″ discs al the request of producer Ronald S. Wise to “raise the level a fraction”.
Note. Due to running time restrictions in 78rpm production the “Rjouissance” movement of the Telemann Ouverture-Suite was moved to the last side of the set, “Air l’Italien” was split on two sides, and Passepieds I & Il appeared on separate disc sides. For this release we restored the original movement order.

Note. The indications on the RCA Blue Card for side 1 of the Brahms Double Concerto, CS 045645, are slightly confusing. While on the card take -2 from the first cutter is clearly designated as master, the three metal parts and the test pressing in the Sony Music Archives all specify -2A and come from the second cutting machine. For this release we have used -2A.
Note. In some Emanuel Feuermann and Philadelphia Orchestra discographies take -1 is given as master take for the last part of Don Quixote, matrix CS 048036. However, the original RCA Blue Gard has take -2 assigned as master and take -1 to serve as master back-up (Hi). For sonic reasons, we used the back-up for this portion to complete the confusion (see p. 19).

Note. The final master for side 1 of Strauss’s Emperor Waltz is CS 062562-2A according to the RCA Victor Blue Gard and not take -3/3A (Hi) as other sources suggest. The existence of two copies of metal parts and a test pressing in the Sony Music Archives indicates that -2A was the preferred master.

Note, Two takes of the beginning of Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 were recorded on two machines on October 11, 1938. The recordings on machine “A” were apparently not good and were marked “D” for “destroy” (CS 027808-1). The recordings from machine “B” were deemed suitable for release and take -2 was selected as master, CS 027808-2 (M). [M = Master]. Alter transferring and listening to both takes, we found that take -2 sounded rather poor compared to take -1, which at this point was marked “HI” [Hi = Hold indefinitely] to serve as a master backup. For this edition we decided to do like our predecessors in the shellac era and replaced the defective master CS 027808-2 with its backup CS 027808-1.
